Native to Asia or possibly West Pakistan and Iran, Green onions have a long history of cultivation spanning over two thousand years. In fact, they were mentioned in the ancient Chinese herbal text Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. Since then, numerous varieties have been developed and are now sold globally as Green onions. These days, they are a staple ingredient in almost every cuisine and can be easily found at farmers markets, specialty grocers, and supermarkets across North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia
Spring onions, scallions, and green onions are milder in flavor than most onions, and can be eaten raw, fried, grilled, in soups, pickled, blanched, or cooked in pancakes.
With only 32 calories per cup, chopped green onions make a great garnish for dips, soups, or salads. You can also use them in salsas or as a topping to add color and flavor.
Common names include green onion, scallion, bunching onion, shallot (Australian usage), spring onion (British usage), Chinese onion.
